Catherine Earnshaw is the protagonist of Wuthering Heights, she a young woman looking to increase her social status and to live a wholesome, wealthy life. Catherine has a very colorful personality, Nelly says that "[Catherine] was never so happy as when we were all scolding her at once." (Brontë 35) This indicates that Catherine enjoys being the center of attention, she also has an impulsive personality that could be blamed on Heathcliff. As for appearances, Catherine has brown curly hair, "You've quite combed the curl out of my hair." (Brontë 58) Catherine also has light eyes and is often described as "Pretty".
Antagonist
Heathcliff described by Catherine Earnshaw, is "He's not a rough diamond--a pearl- containing oyster of rustic: He's a fierce, pitiless wolfish man." (Brontë 109). In my personal opinion I believe Heathcliff is the antagonist of Wuthering Heights, he is often described as a passionate man hellbent on revenge. He performs vicious, cruel acts on those he thinks has wronged him, society has painted Heathcliff as a "Romantic man who just wants love." As someone who has read the book I know that is a false statement. Heathcliff basically brought Catherine's suffering and death, after her passing Heathcliff proclaimed that Catherine said that he had killed her (Brontë 176). Heathcliff in appearance-wise is described multiple times "As a handsome man" (Brontë 86) and described by Nelly as "...A tall, athletic, well formed man" (Brontë 56).
